Vintage Voltage with Modern Sensibility GearNuts’s synthesists are impressed with the Black 3109 VCF/VCA, inspired by some of the most well-known synthesizers of the 1980s, but with some contemporary considerations. This combo lowpass filter and voltage-controlled amplifier has been designed around the AS3109 VCF chip – a contemporary iteration of the hallmark IR3109 chip. Erica Synths set out to faithfully capture its best facets, while improving on its shortcomings, including a compensation 2-way switch for volume drops that originally occurred with the higher resonance values of the IR3109. Moreover, a cutoff CV attenuverter spans a ±5V range, with 1V/octave tracking, a secondary CV input, and a self-oscillating mode to use the VCF as a VCO.
