Product Information

  • ❖ Sumac is very popular in the Middle East and Mediterranean region. In countries such as Israel, Turkey and Italy, dried, ground sumac is used as a flavour and colour enhancer. These berries have an astringent taste, reminiscent of lemons, but not as sour. In fact, the Romans used these berries before lemons were imported into Europe to give their meals a spicy taste.
  • ❖Our spectacular, cured sumac grows wild around Gaziantep, Turkey, where it is not dried but chopped and packed in salt to preserve it. It has a bright, sour, salty and slightly fermented taste and is one of our most popular spices among professional and home chefs alike.
  • ❖ A classic spice from the Middle East that you can replace with lemon juice in any recipe or use to add character and brightness to salads, fish, meat or dips. It is also a perfect topping for everything from hummus to salad, fried vegetables or meat to scrambled eggs
  • ❖ Enhances your dips and salads with a sour lemon taste. Sumac (sumak) can also be used as a salt substitute. If it is added to meat before cooking, the reaction during cooking creates a salty sensation. Perfect for sprinkling or seasoning hummus and other Middle Eastern dips and mezes or adding to meat dishes before cooking or even powdering salads.
  • ❖ This sweet but sour taste is followed by an astringent, strong budding. Sumak has a varied taste profile, yet goes well with other spices such as allspice, chilli, thyme and cumin. One of the most common spice mixtures in which sumac is found is Za'atar.
