Of Polish and German-American descent, she's been cooking with her family from a young age, learning from her grandmother, mom and aunts, as well as from from her uncle, a baker trained in the American Navy during the Second World War. Like millions the world over, Bielski became enchanted by the tales of Beatrix Potter as a child. After her father's death in 1986, she helped her mom recover by bringing books home for her to read. Her mom went on to become a collector not only of books but of literary cookbooks. Several years before her death in 2018, Bielski's mom lost her eyesight to macular degeneration. Though she could no longer read the Tales of Beatrix Potter, she began to compose new stories in her head, featuring the characters from Potter's tales. Inspired by her mother's love of Peter Rabbit and friends--and her extensive collection of literary-inspired cookbooks--, Bielski compiled this collection of recipes from family favorites and her own original takes on classic and contemporary English and American fare, all inspired by the adventures and misadventures of Potter's beloved characters.
