The through-hole on the drive end allows the use of locking pins & rings to lock the tang of the impact wrench or driver so that it won't fall off or stick on the fastener head. (Note: Do Not Include Pins and Rings ).

Reduces wear and increases torque on fasteners by placing force on fastener walls rather than fastener corners, avoid stress concentrations that can cause cracking.
