Product Description
Safranina (Safranine) Dye
Safranin is a contrasting biological colorant used in Gram's Staining to provide a more intense violet colour to Gram+ bacteria while dyeing G-bacteria, in histology and in cythology. Safranin is used as a contrast liquid in some staining protocols, coloring the cell core red. Also used to detect cartilage, mucin and mast granules
Safranin is a dimethyl safranin. There is also a trimethyl safranin, which has an added methyl group in the orto- position of the lowest ring. Both compounds are essentially identical in biological dyeing uses, and many safranin manufacturers do not distinguish between the two. Safranin commercial preparations frequently have a mixture of both.
Safranin is also used as a redox indicator in analytical chemistry.
