- Kit includes Beaker for Water, Underwater Weighing Pan, Counterweight for opposite end of Beam, and Instructions.
- After Weighing your sample in "Air" (which is the same as weighing it on the Ohaus balance), then use the kit to Weigh your sample in "Water". To do this, raise the recessed Beaker platform of the Ohaus Balance about a third of the way up, as in the photo above, place on it a Beaker of Water, suspend the "Gem Holder" wire in the water with Gem or other sample in place, add Counterweight to opposite end of Beam, and take your Weight in Water.
- Then calculate SG by dividing the difference between the heavier Weight in Air and the lighter Weight in Water, into the Weight in Air.
- In our experience, accurate SG measurements with these Ohaus 310/311 Balances are achievable on samples weighing down to about 1.5 grams. So use more sensitive equipment to measure SG for samples like Gemstones.
