Each red pad is equipped with 2 rows of 10, 5/8" brass bells, 20 bells in total, producing some very powerful jingles. Each pad has cushioning inside and you can tie each one around your ankle. The brass bells are from the Northern Indian State of Uttar Pradesh, which is well known for quality brass manufacturers. Ankle bells as traditionally used in the North Indian style of dance called Kathak. The Karthak dance evolved from the nomadic bards of ancient northern India, known as Kathakars or storytellers. Over the centuries, Kathak dance incorperted dance elements from Persia and Central Asian; today it is a rich art form with traces of Tribal, bhakti, temple and ritual movement.
