- THE RIVER HORSE: The name Hippopotamus means River Horse, and Hippos truly do love the water. In fact, if one looks at a map of rivers in sub-Saharan Africa, one is also looking at the range of Hippos. They spend much of their days in the water and are never far from it.
- CULTAL REPRESENTATION: Although Hippos no longer live in the lower Nile areas of Egypt, the massive beasts were once important elements of Ancient Egyptian culture. The relationship was complicated, however. On one hand, Hippos lived in the waters and mud of the life-giving Nile River, so they received honor and respect and were seen as symbols of rebirth.
- TWO SIDES OF THE HIPPO: The Egyptian goddess Tauret, who protected women giving birth, even has the face and body of a Hippo. On the other hand, Hippos were dangerous. They ate newly planted wheat, they overturned ships, and they were quite deadly. Eventually, Hippos were hunted to extinction in the lower Nile area of Egypt, but they range freely throughout central Africa.
