Welcome to the San Isabel National Forest. Local folklore claims the Forest was named for Queen Isabella of Spain, but the name San Isabel translates from Spanish as Saint Isabella. The San Isabel National Forest started out in 1902 as one of America's earliest Timber Reserves. The San Isabel Timber Reserve over time was combined with portions of other Timber Reserves including Spanish Peaks or Las Animas, Wet Mountains, Sangre de Cristo, Cochetopa, and Leadville. Over its long and varied history, the Forest has grown steadily and now, known simply as the San Isabel National Forest, encompasses over 1.1 million acres. Managed for a variety of public benefits including recreation, water, fish, wildlife, grazing, timber, & minerals, the San Isabel National Forest is your Forest. Found in southeast Colorado, the Forest has become Colorado's backyard. Campgrounds, picnic areas, Wilderness; hiking, biking, and riding trails; lakes, reservoirs, streams, and rivers; nineteen mountains over 14,000 feet high; historical landmarks; and Scenic Byways provide something for everyone!
