EAN stands for European Article Number. Similar to UPC barcodes, it serves as a barcode identifier for products. While the UPC is largely used in North America, in Europe EAN codes are more common. The EAN is the same as the UPC, except that it has an extra digit country code attached to it. If you are looking to sell your items in the United States and Canada, it is best to stick with the UPC as most barcode readers will be able to read them. However, if selling internationally, it may be better to use an EAN. On Amazon, if you are selling a unique product, it is likely that you will need a GTIN code, meaning a UPC or EAN (or ISBN for books). Registering your product’s identifying codes on Amazon will work largely the same whether it is a UPC or EAN.
