UPC codes are a type of format for barcodes. They are the primary barcode used within the United States and Canada. In order to sell a product on Amazon, it must have an assigned UPC barcode, unless it is exempt. If this product is the seller’s own unique product, it may require a UPC of its own. If the product is currently sold by competitions, they will generally have a common UPC code.
When listing a product on Amazon, there will be an input box available in order to assign the product’s UPC code.
If your product is unique or you are the manufacturer, you will need to buy a barcode for your product. The best way is through GS1, the standards organization for barcodes. When you apply, unique identifiers will be produced for your company and specific products.
