  • Sodalite is known for its often bright-blue color, and it usually contains white veins or streaking. Specimens are often polished or sliced into slabs for collectors. Sodalite is named in reference to its sodium ("soda") content.
  • Chemical Composition: Na8(Al6Si6O24)Cl2; Member of: Sodalite Group; Hardness: 5.5 - 6; Color: Blue;
  • Discovered in 1811 in the Ilimaussaq intrusive complex in Greenland, sodalite did not become important as an ornamental stone until 1891 when vast deposits of fine material were discovered in Ontario, Canada.
